What is CERT?

In emergencies, quick and informed action can save lives. That’s where FEMA’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program comes in—a vital initiative designed to empower everyday citizens to step up during disasters and emergencies.

What is CERT?

CERT is a program established by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to train volunteers in disaster preparedness and basic response skills. The program’s primary goal is to enable communities to respond effectively during emergencies when professional first responders may be overwhelmed or delayed.

What Do CERT Volunteers Do?

CERT volunteers are trained to perform various critical tasks during emergencies, such as:

  • Basic Search and Rescue: Locating and helping trapped individuals.
  • Fire Suppression: Using simple tools like fire extinguishers to control small fires.
  • Medical Operations: Providing first aid, triage, and basic care to the injured.
  • Disaster Preparedness: Helping communities develop emergency plans and organize resources.

Why is CERT Important?

In major disasters, first responders may take hours or even days to reach every affected area. CERT bridges this gap by equipping citizens to take immediate action. Trained volunteers can mitigate damage, assist neighbors, and reduce strain on emergency services.

How to Get Involved

Anyone aged 18 or older (or younger with parental consent) that lives in Sharpstown can join the Sharpstown CERT program. Training is free and includes hands-on exercises in fire safety, medical operations, team organization, and disaster psychology. After completing the training, members can participate in community drills or assist with public education and preparedness efforts.

Building Resilient Communities

CERT embodies the principle of community resilience. It empowers individuals to be proactive, not just reactive, during crises, fostering a sense of preparedness and solidarity. Whether it’s helping after a hurricane, earthquake, or other disaster, CERT volunteers play a crucial role in protecting lives and strengthening communities.
